Impact of URN on Marine Ecosystem

URN Management aims to reduce underwater noise pollution from activities like shipping and construction to protect marine life. By adopting quieter technologies, best practices, and stringent regulations, we minimize the impact on marine ecosystems, preserving biodiversity and ocean health. Through research, collaboration, and public awareness, we strive for a sustainable balance between marine life and human activities.

India's Leadership in Underwater Radiated Noise Management

India, through DG Shipping, has proposed a digital tool for mapping underwater noise, presented by MRC to the IMO at MEPC-76. This initiative was accepted, positioning India as the lead nation for underwater noise management in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). This role enhances India’s global influence in sustainable shipping policy, emphasizing the country’s commitment to reducing underwater noise pollution and protecting marine ecosystems.

Shipping Radiated Noise Mapping Tool

The Maritime Research Centre (MRC) in collaboration with Nirdhwani Technology (NDT), has developed a unique tool for real-time assessment of Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) from ships. This advanced data analysis and prediction tool utilizes both AIS data and wind data to provide a realistic assessment of changes in noise due to shipping traffic and wind. This is particularly relevant in the low-frequency range, where noise from ships and wind are most dominant. The frequency of this noise coincides with the range used by marine mammals, making this tool crucial for understanding and mitigating impacts on these sensitive marine species.
